About The Office of Development
in the Archdiocese of Hartford

The Office of Development is a strategic ministry that enables parishes, schools and ministries to attain their full mission through a program of visioning, planning, donor relations, and charitable giving opportunities.

The Office of Development serves as a partner and resource to all parishes, schools and ministries with charitable major and planned gifts. Together with The Hartford Catholic Development Corporation, we help donors establish Charitable Gift Annuities and Charitable Remainder Trusts to help support the parish, school and/or ministry of their choice.

Our vision is to build endowments through major and planned gift development, securing a permanent and perpetual source of funding for the Church, and all entities of the Archdiocese of Hartford.

Here to Help Archdiocesan Ministries of Service

Planned Gifts - We help friends of the Archdiocese of Hartford explore the opportunity for planned giving by providing information and education on how planned gifts work, and helping individuals decide if a planned gift is right for them. The Office of Development provides professional gift planning consultation, and the legal resources necessary for establishing Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts, and other planned gifts.

The Hartford Catholic Development Corporation - As part of a complete stewardship strategy, we help parishes, schools and ministries promote planned gifts to parishioners, alumni and friends. A Few Frequently Asked Questions About Endowments

What is an Endowment?

An endowment is a fund that is established with a specific purpose, usually for the long-term benefit of a charitable organization, in which the principal (or corpus) of the fund is never spent. Only the earnings generated each year, or a pre-determined percentage of the corpus, can be withdrawn. Benefactors can make endowed contributions to the fund whereupon the principal would grow and potentially generate more earnings each year.

Why Should A Parish, School, Ministry Create An Endowment?

Endowments create permanent sources of revenue to help fund the important work of your parish, school or ministry. They are especially attractive to benefactors who wish to leave a legacy by providing a significant gift to support the eternal work of the Church.

Why Should You Partner With The Hartford Catholic Development Corporation?

Many donors prefer to perpetuate their gifts through an endowment program, providing a long-term source of income for their most cherished intentions. Many donors in other dioceses are choosing to direct their gifts in this fashion. By partnering with the Corporation, you gain from the confidence and assurance of knowing your gifts are being professionally managed.

Upon Settlement What Percentage Of Planned Gifts Are Credited To The Beneficiary, And What Percentage Goes To The Archdiocese?

90% of the fair market value of all Charitable Remainder Trusts and Charitable Gift Annuities at the time of settlement will go to the designated beneficiary. The remaining 10% will be credited to the Archdiocese to cover administrative and management expense. 100% of all bequests go directly to the designated beneficiary.

The Advantages to Forming An Endowment Apostolate Team

An Endowment Apostolate Team promotes and encourages endowment development through charitable planned giving. The team shares a vision for strengthening the works of the parish in service to future generations. The success of building an endowment depends on the efforts of the parish, and Endowment Development Apostles are the leaders who make that success a reality. The U.S. Bishops, in their pastoral letter, Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response remind us that good disciples and stewards do the following:
Receive God's gifts gratefully; Cultivate them responsibly; Share them with justice and love; Return them with increase to the Lord.
As Catholics, we believe that our assets and our ability to acquire and accumulate them are gifts from a loving, generous God. We have a responsibility to use these gifts wisely and prudently. A clear Gospel message is to share them with others: our family certainly, but also with those institutions devoted to spreading God’s reign on earth.
